Millennium Film Workshop (tenant)

La MaMa E.T.C. presents large-scale productions in the Ellen Stewart Theater on the 3rd Floor and a public archive on the 1st floor. Millennium Film Workshop runs a movie theater and editing rooms for
independent filmmakers in the basement. Once known as Turn Hall, the building was the site of A Frightful Dream and Abraham Golfaden’s The Witch, thought to be the first entirely Yiddish theatrical productions in American history. Emma Goldman was arrested during the opening remarks of a speech here in 1906, but returned successfully in 1907. The building later became the Biltmore Studios and ABC Stage City. Many movies were filmed here including Coogan’s Bluff (1968) with Clint Eastwood and the Oscar-nominated Hester Street (1975), as well as the popular television series Naked City (1958-63). After the film studio leaves the space, the building falls into disrepair and is slated by the city for demolition until La MaMa, Millennium, and the Carlos Perez Community Center take over in 1974.
