74 EAST 4th STREET
La MaMa E.T.C.
La MaMa’s main building includes a black box theater, a cabaret space, and administrative space. In
1892 a German music society called the Schillerbund Besangverein moved here and completely
remodeled the building. The busts of composers are still visible on the façade. La MaMa took possession
in 1969 when the building was missing one of 4 walls and many of its floors. Ellen Stewarrt had founded
La MaMa in a basement at 321 E. 9th Street in 1961. Among the hundreds of playwrights to get their
start at La MaMa are Tom Eyen, Tom O’Horgan, Charles Ludlam, Sam Shepard, and Harvey Feirstein. In
1993, Ellen Stewart is inducted into the Broadway Theater Hall of Fame, the first Off-Off Broadway
Producer to ever receive this honor.
