CultureHub is an award-winning global art and technology community that builds on the 63-year legacy of our founding partners, La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club in New York City and the Seoul Institute of the Arts in South Korea. Since 2009, CultureHub has explored the critical role emerging technologies play in the future of artmaking, amplifying the work of more than 1,000 artists.
CultureHub supports risk-taking work that pursues pressing social questions, while making new artistic forms possible—including creative code, new media performance, interactive installation, e-textiles, and browser-based environments. Our programming centers four core initiatives: the Residency Program (est. 2011), which supports artists creating technologically-informed work via access to space, tools, and resources; CoLab (est. 2013), our free art and technology program for the next generation of creators; Re-Fest (est. 2012), an annual media arts festival that brings artists, activists, and technologists together to explore our role in re-shaping the future; and Experiments in Digital Storytelling / EDS (est. 2018), which develops humane technologies and releases them open-source, and seeks new forms of art through the convergence of storytelling and emerging technologies.
We believe that a multiplicity of voices and perspectives strengthens our organization’s ability to positively impact the field at large. Our seven-person team, under the guidance of 10 dedicated Board members, actively fosters a diverse and loyal audience who engage with our artists’ work in various stages of development. CultureHub is radically inclusive and prioritizes support for creative practitioners that have been traditionally marginalized, including BIPOC, queer, gender non-conforming, and disability communities. By exploring hybrid presentation models that embrace the full potential of both online and offline spaces, we have developed national partnerships that are essential to our community-building efforts. Through our residency, festival, and digital storytelling incubator, we have proudly partnered with 60+ organizations, such as the Center for Constitutional Rights, Magnum Foundation, Safe Harbors Indigenous Collective, BOMB Magazine, SVA Bio Art Lab, Heidi Duckler Dance, and UCLA Art|Sci Center. These partnerships help disseminate and expand the reach of open calls and the work of CultureHub artists. In 2023 alone, we worked with 437 artists, reaching 110,000+ unique viewers in 50 U.S. states and 100+ countries.
CultureHub’s programs are designed to complement each other, creating multiple entry points and opportunities to engage with artists and their creative process. We place artists at the center of our work and are excited by their experimentation. We strive to build long-term relationships with artists that are in dialogue with the complexities of the moment, but realize that art doesn’t happen in a vacuum. Artists need a vibrant community in order to flourish. CultureHub nurtures an ecosystem of support and resources that allow artists to develop humane technologies and tell stories that spark transformation.
