New York Theatre Workshop (NYTW) is a contemporary theatre company dedicated to exploring and presenting theatrical experiences that reflect, respond to, and invigorate the world in which we live and work. NYTW produces a year-round season of new work at our 199-seat theatre (79 E 4th St). NYTW has a member base of over 4,000, and attracts over 45,000 audience members annually.
Founded in 1979 and incorporated in 1982, NYTW is committed to the development of innovative theatre by supporting theatre artists at all stages of their careers, providing an environment where work can be created free from the artistic compromise and forbidding financial demands often associated with commercial ventures.
Over the past two decades, NYTW has evolved to become a significant force in New York City's vibrant cultural landscape and is now recognized as one of the leading producing theatres of original work in the United States. The Workshop places the artist at the center of its mission, and, as a result, the work developed and produced here is aesthetically, thematically, and methodologically diverse. During the course of a season, audiences can engage with an eclectic mix of theatre, including full-scale musicals, bare-bones readings, and multimedia productions.
In addition to our full productions, our Artist Development Activities form a wide range of creative learning opportunities which support the artistic growth of emerging and established theatre artists. Activities include summer residencies, fellowships for artists and administrators of color, companies-in-residence, two reading series showcasing nearly100 readings a season, a cultural exchange program, and a community of almost 400 affiliated theatre artists, the Ususal Suspects.
NYTW's Education Initiatives include: Learning Workshop, a multidisciplinary theatre education program for middle and high school students;internships; and Public Programs in conjunction with our productions,comprised of After Words post-performance discussions, panel discussions, and online resources for further learning.
