FAB Fridays

After a successful pilot program in the spring of 2008 Fourth Arts Block is re-instating FAB Fridays in October 2008. FAB will sell consignment tickets to shows in the E. 4th Street Cultural District and to shows produced by friends of FAB. Shows and tickets will change weekly, and only be sold at the FAB! Kiosk, and later the FAB! Ticket window located in the District. By bringing people to the street and engaging them on a one-to-one basis this gives Fourth Arts Block the opportunity to gain crucial information that will allow FAB to better serve our audiences. Check back in late September for weekly listings of shows selling tickets through the FAB! Kiosk.

Shop E. 4th

In partnership with the local Commercial Committee, Fourth Arts Block presents Shop E. 4th, a day of great shopping deals in the E. 4th Street Cultural District. A bi-annual event, in November and May, that features discounts, shopping bingo, refreshments and more at over 15 businesses in the District. Check back in October for specifics on our November 8th , 2008 Shop E. 4th Event.

Streetscape Project

Fourth Arts Block has been working in the past 18 months with urban design firm Starr-Whitehouse to re-envision the look of the E. 4th Street Cultural District. Working with elements as basic as street lighting and signage, tackling issues as complicated as pedestrian traffic flow, and with the help & opinions of Cooper Square Committee, Cooper Square Mutual Association, residents of the District, merchants, and all the cultural organizations, a mutually approved of how to improve the physical appearance and use of the E. 4th Street Cultural District, has been created. Public Art

Renovations have begun and scaffolding is now a semi-permanent presence on the East 4th Street between 2nd Avenue and Bowery. Construction workers and companies request us to pardon their appearance. FAB's new public art program called "StreetScape"is a rotating exhibit, an attempt to coexist with scaffolding by embellishing it with artwork that references a revitalization of the East Village / Lower East Side.

"ONWARD" is a group show that expresses each artist's personal connection for downtown personalities that include artists, poets, performers, musicians that have from the past and present, with a positive look on what the renovations will bring to the future of the community.

The opening will coincide with"FAB! Festival", on September 27, 2008, from 1:00-5:00PM. East 4th Street between 2nd Avenue and Bowery will be closed to traffic for a block party. There will be performances, workshops, food, music, drink and discounts from local businesses.

To be considered for future exhibitions, please e-mail Joyce Manalo at joyce@art-forward.com and include low res images, resume, and website address.

Open House NYC

Fourth Arts Block is excited to participate in the 6th Annual Open House New York Weekend, October 4 & 5, 2008, America's largest celebration of architecture and design. FAB has been invited to join 200 unique sites that represent the best of New York's architecture, design, history & culture.

In 2005, New York City sold 8 properties for $8 to long-time arts groups on East 4th Street between Bowery & 2nd Ave and designated the block a Cultural District. Take a tour and learn more about the history and future of the district with Fourth Arts Block’s leadership.

Saturday, October 4th, 12:00-5:00PM open visit hours, 1:00PM & 3:00PM tours. Please email info@fabnyc.org for more details or to reserve a place on a tour.

Free on Fourth

Fourth Arts Block will be joining with Free Night of Theater, Theatre Communications Group's exciting national audience development program designed to attract new audiences to America's not-for-profit theatres. Since the pilot program, which debuted in three cities in 2005, Free Night has expanded across the country and will be presented in over 100 cities by more than 600 theatres in 2008. This year is Free Night’s first in New York City.

As the Free Night program rolls out over an ever expanding national stage and onto E. 4th Street, Fourth Arts Block is thrilled to provide access to thousands of new audience members to experience the joy of theatre for the first time -- absolutely free of charge.

Arts venues and groups in the E. 4th Street Cultural District will be participating with the aim of having several consecutive nights of free theater and events that will define the District as a home of the Off-Off Broadway movement.

Check back in early September 2008 for more information.
