SUMMARY:Open Arts LES: Batingua Arts at Trick-or-Streets
DESCRIPTION:Batingua (Bah-ting-ah) Arts is an Afro-Caribbean dance and drum company dedicated to preserving\, teaching\, and celebrating the cultural traditions of Africa and the African Diaspora while using the arts as a powerful tool for community connection\, cultural identity\, education\, and collective expression. \nFounded in 2005 by Artistic Director Persephone DaCosta\, Batingua takes its name from a Moore word from Burkina Faso meaning “the land of my ancestors.” The name reflects the company’s mission: to honor the wisdom of those who came before us while creating space for today’s communities to connect with their history\, tell their stories\, and shape the future through movement\, music\, and culture. \nBatingua’s work bridges tradition and contemporary expression. The company draws from rich dance and musical traditions throughout the African Diaspora\, with a particular focus on the Caribbean cultures of Trinidad\, Jamaica\, and Haiti\, while incorporating West African dance and drumming\, contemporary movement\, spoken word\, step\, and other forms of artistic expression. Through this fusion\, Batingua creates dynamic performances that are culturally grounded\, physically powerful\, and relevant to contemporary audiences. \nAt the heart of Batingua’s work is the belief that cultural arts are not simply performances—they are living knowledge. The company creates opportunities for people of all ages to experience culture through participation\, education\, and artistic practice. Batingua’s programs bring communities together across generations\, using dance and drumming to build connection\, celebrate heritage\, encourage wellness\, and create spaces where people can see themselves and their histories represented. \nUnder the artistic leadership of Persephone DaCosta\, Batingua has developed a distinctive approach to cultural arts that centers authenticity\, accessibility\, education\, and community empowerment. Batingua has shared its work on major stages and in community spaces throughout New York\, including: Madison Square Garden\, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade\, the New York City Labor Day Parade alongside Mayor Eric Adams\, the Caribbean Youth Festival\, the Key Awards at the United Palace\, The Museum of Natural History\, JCAL’s Children’s Arts Festival\, and numerous schools\, cultural institutions\, community organizations\, and public events. \nBatingua Arts is more than a dance company. It is a living expression of ancestral knowledge\, contemporary creativity\, and the power of community through the arts.

Roosevelt Park\, where communities from diverse backgrounds intersect\, share space\, play\, and gather. The installation utilizes dynamic light and moire patterns – creating shifting visual layers to conceal and reveal compositions that celebrate the immigrant experience. \nHuman movement is a force of nature and an essential catalyst for cultural evolution. While the contemporary political landscape often criminalizes this natural mobility\, and the nation state relies on the labor of those it simultaneously disenfranchises\, Con las manos llenas envisions an alternative reality and honors the vital contributions of immigrants to the American experiment. \nThrough the metaphor of the hand as a tool of labor\, creativity\, and solidarity\, Con las manos llenas activates this public space\, imagining a world where the migrant journey is fundamentally valued\, visible\, and celebrated. \n– Raúl Ayala \nBios \nRaúl Ayala’s practice bridges art\, social engagement\, and pedagogy through large-scale paintings\, site-specific installations\, collaborative murals\, performance\, and other public interventions. As a drawing and painting lecturer at Rutgers University\, his classroom mirrors his studio: a space for connection\, storytelling\, and hands-on experimentation. Honored with awards in both New York and Ecuador\, Ayala’s work weaves cultural narratives and ecological themes into the fabric of shared spaces\, inviting audiences to see familiar places anew. \nCaridad De La Luz is a world-renowned spoken word artist known as La Bruja. She became the Executive Director of the Nuyorican Poets Cafe in Jan. 2022 after beginning her career there in 1996. She won an Emmy for the cultural short: Legacy of Puerto Rican Poetry which aired on ABC during the National Puerto Rican Day Parade 2021. \nHoracio Martínez is an Argentine-American guitarist\, composer\, singer-songwriter\, multi-instrumentalist\, and teaching artist based in New York City. His work blends South American folk traditions\, jazz improvisation\, and contemporary songwriting\, creating a distinctive musical voice rooted in both heritage and innovation. \nHoracio Martínez – guitar and Andean instruments.
