At Fragile—An exhibition by Alexis Mendoza
Food insecurity is a complex global issue that is difficult to define and measure due to differences in research methods, socioeconomic contexts, and interpretations. These challenges have made it difficult to develop effective policies that address the root causes of hunger and ensure consistent access to nutritious food. Alexis Mendoza’s sculpture series Fragile explores these complexities through iron and steel sculptures that symbolize both the resilience of people experiencing food insecurity and the fragility of systems meant to protect them. The interconnected designs represent contributing factors such as economic inequality, climate change, political instability, gender disparities, and limited access to education. The series emphasizes the importance of addressing these systemic issues through education, social equity, environmental sustainability, and strong community support. Ultimately, Fragile uses art and visual storytelling as a call to action, encouraging viewers to rethink food insecurity and work toward long-term solutions that create a more just and equitable world.
