Cuchifritos Gallery: 88 Essex Street (inside Essex Market)
Join Artists Alliance Inc. for a guided tour of Wild Things, a solo exhibition by resident artist Sunny Leerasanthanah on view at Cuchifritos Gallery + Project Space inside Essex Market on the Lower East Side. Combining on-site installation, video, and photography, the exhibition draws an unexpected line between Florida’s state-sponsored hunts for invasive Burmese pythons in the Everglades and Teddy Roosevelt-era natural history dioramas of taxidermied wildlife, treating both as stages where ideas about belonging, identity, and American mythology get performed and enforced. Visitors will get an in-depth look at how imagery of hunting, invasive species control, and tourism opens onto bigger questions of who and what gets labeled “unwanted,” and why. Tours will be guided by AAI staff who can speak to the artist’s process and the gallery’s residency program.
