Last chance to see our show “A Tapestry of Aliveness” — including works from the last thirteen years of our New York City Fellowship!

Magnum Foundation is a nonprofit organization that expands creativity and diversity in documentary photography, activating new audiences and ideas through the innovative use of images.

Since 2011, Magnum Foundation’s New York City Fellowship has provided a launchpad for early-career photographers living and working in New York City. Recognizing the challenges of making a living as a working photographer, this fellowship serves a unique dual purpose: supporting the development of the fellows’ photographic projects, while also providing them with paid work experience in Magnum Foundation’s office.

Thirteen years and 32 fellows later, this diverse group of photographers has gone on to produce vibrant visual storytelling in and outside of New York City, while also playing crucial roles as teachers, organizers, and connectors in their communities.

In “A Tapestry of Aliveness,” a group of fellows come together in an exercise of collaborative co-curation, weaving their individual images together into a tapestry of New York City that expresses the ongoing acts of living, collectivism, and agency of communities that are often pushed to its margins. With work about migration, sanctuary, chosen family, and belonging, they center tenderness and care in their approaches to imagemaking, and honor the places we find home.

Magnum Foundation expands creativity and diversity in documentary photography, activating new audiences and ideas through the innovative use of images. Through grant-making, mentoring, and creative collaborations, we partner with socially engaged image-makers experimenting with new models for storytelling. Magnum Foundation is committed to supporting a global network of social justice and human rights-focused photographers. They are also active participants in the local arts and activist community on New York City’s Lower East Side. As they expand possibilities for the next generation of photographers, they also work to preserve the histories of humanistic and documentary photography, including the larger Magnum Photos community. Magnum Foundation’s work is grounded in the belief that images are a powerful tool for engaging issues and ideas. Stories told in creative new ways by image makers working within their own communities have the possibility to transform how we see and understand the world.
