For more than 50 years, the Nuyorican Poets Cafe has cultivated and presented groundbreaking works of poetry, theater, music, and visual/media arts. Poet Allen Ginsberg once called the Cafe “the most integrated place on the planet” since our artists, audiences, and students reflect the cultural diversity that makes New York City the world’s greatest metropolis.

Founded in 1973, the Nuyorican Poets Cafe began as a living room salon in founder Miguel Algarín’s East Village apartment, a place for featuring poetry, music, stage plays, screenplays, and other creative works that didn’t fit into the academic, publishing, and mainstream media cultures of the time. The Cafe continues to provide a forum for artists who are shut out of the mainstream, an incubator for the development, celebration, and amplification of their work to audiences in New York and throughout the world.
