Design East was founded in1983 by sculptor Emily Clark and painter Jon Millstein in a small storefront in the East Village. Selling one-of-a-kind, hand-painted shirts and jewelry, Jon and Emily rapidly became well known for their creative, artistic and high quality silk-screened t-shirts and graphic designs. The storefront also served as a gallery for their paintings and sculpture, showcasing the broad range of their talents.

In 1996 WIP NYC (Formerly Design East) was approached by the internship coordinator from a local high school seeking businesses to host full-time interns. The first two interns were instrumental in informing the design and implementation the internship program as a hands-on learning experience, where students become actively engaged in all aspects of the business. This fateful act changed the course of WIPNYC as word of the internship program began to spread and internship coordinators from other NYC high schools began contacting WIP. In 2004, WIP became a not-for-profit organization and increased their community outreach efforts by actively seeking New York City public and independent schools needing to place students in hands-on internships.

Since that time we have created internships for approximately 15 students annually from a growing list of New York City high schools. We are often able to provide paid summer jobs for high school students who have interned at WIP and several former interns are currently full-time staff.

Led by founder and Executive Director, Emily Clark, Works In Progress prides itself on quality workmanship, unparalleled customer service and a history of community involvement for over 30 years.

WIP now offers adult classes, on-site printing and in-house printing events.
