Teatro Círculo was founded in 1994 by a consortium of Latino artists and academics, who were interested in preserving classical 17th Century Spanish theatre repertoire while also supporting the creation and presentation of new work by contemporary Latino artists. Teatro Círculo’s mission is to introduce the public to the best works of Spanish and Pan Latino playwrights, both contemporary and classical and to foster an appreciation of the richness of Latin American and Iberian cultures in the context of the pluralism that characterizes New York City.
Teatro Círculo´s CallBack Series fosters and supports the work of Latino independent artists by giving a second exposure to plays that had a previous limited engagement. Participants should be independent artist(s) whose work has been professionally staged for a limited time. Works should have an extension of 30 to 60 minutes. The staging of the works should be adaptable to a 16’ X 18’ performing area. Works can be submitted in English and/or Spanish. If the work is a play in English, a Spanish translation of the play must be available for supertitles and vice versa. Teatro Círculo reserves the rights to adapt the translation for subtitling purposes. If accepted, Teatro Círculo will provide: – A black box theater for a three-week run – A team of set and lighting designers – Marketing and Publicity – A stipend of $1,500 USD Teatro Círculo will not be able to provide: – Visas / Work permit / Lodging / Ground and/or Air Transportation Check website or email TC for upcoming deadlines.
Education & Workshops
WORKSHOPS: Every year Teatro Circulo brings to NYC the best directors and theatre artists from the nation and around the world to teach our local actors both the newest as well as traditional acting techniques. Summer Institute: Every summer Teatro Círculo engages more than 25 youngsters at risk from the Lower East Side in an intensive theatre training geared to develop their skills in all aspects of theater production; from acting to set, costume and lighting design, to how to operate a sound and lighting board to writing and directing. Ultimately we hope to help the young people involved develop an enriched sense of self and the value of team work. Teatro Círculo provides all the resources necessary for the project, including set materials, costumes, space, and the instructors who are professionals in the field. Programs for Seniors
In 2018, “Abuelito, dime tú” (Grandpa, tell me a story), celebrated its fourth year as a theater training program for Seniors in the Lower East Side. This initiative provides theatre training to our abuelitos in two seniors centers in the Lower East Side. For three months, the seniors developed and rehearsed a theatrical production, which then was presented free of charge to general audiences at our professional theater. 2018 participating senior centers were Grand Street Settlement, Lillian Wald Senior Center, Henry Street Settlement, Project FIND Hamilton Senior Center, Cypress Hills, and Fulton St. Senior Center. Approximately 75 seniors engaged in the program. For more information on the program, contact Rubén Darío Cruz at: firstname.lastname@example.org or call 212-505-1808.
