Teatro Círculo was founded in 1994 by a consortium of Latino artists and academics, who were interested in preserving classical 17th Century Spanish theatre repertoire while also supporting the creation and presentation of new work by contemporary Latino artists. Teatro Círculo’s founders were inspired by the absence of a consistent forum for the presentation of plays by classic Spanish writers like Lope de Vega, Tirso de Molina and Calderón de la Barca. From its inception, Teatro Círculo has been committed to preserving and promoting Latino cultural heritage through the commissioning, production and presentation of creative, inclusive and educational theatre works.

Our mission is to introduce the public to the best works of Spanish and Pan Latino playwrights, both contemporary and classical and to foster an appreciation of the richness of Latin American and Iberian cultures in the context of the pluralism that characterizes New York City.
