Printed Matter / St Marks is a non-profit bookstore committed to the distribution of and education about artists’ books and related publications. Here you’ll find everything from locally-made zines to rare historical books.

Join us at Printed Matter / St Marks from 1-4pm to make your own single-sheet zines! Using simple (yet versatile) methods, visitors can make and take home their own artist books.

Founded in 1976, Printed Matter, Inc. is the world’s leading non-profit organization dedicated to the dissemination, understanding and appreciation of artists’ books and related publications.

Printed Matter / St Marks is our second Printed Matter bookstore, opened in July 2018. The ground floor storefront is located in the heart of the East Village (on the corner of St Marks Place and 2nd Avenue) within the nonprofit arts institution Swiss Institute.

Printed Matter / St Marks aims to foster and grow Printed Matter’s community in the East Village, Chinatown, and the Lower East Side. Printed Matter focuses on books and programming that celebrate the history of avant garde art and countercultural publications in Lower Manhattan. They offer public events to the community which include book launches, readings, panel discussions, performances and monthly bookbinding workshops.
